Guess who?
ME!!!
I found this really old photo of me while I was driving a pedal-powered car. I must have been around 3-years old in this pic. This was on a trip to Baguio with my Lola (grandmother). I’m not sure, though, if this was the same trip where I caught the dreaded chickenpox.
Yellow car…red outfit…retro overload!!

This morning I awoke to see rain clouds outside my window. Little did I know that those dark clouds were a foreboding for some of the saddest pieces of news that I’ve had to swallow in a long time.
.
As I am accustomed to, before having my first cup of coffee, I immediately turned on the television to check the news. Lo and behold, there it was, the Philippines’ beacon of hope was gone. Our beloved former President, our symbol of democracy, the pride of Filipino mothers, our Citizen Cory had passed.
.
I’m sure that I am not alone in this grief. Many people’s lives were touched by this remarkable person. The oft said, “The ordinary housewife has risen!” is testament to the fact that women like myself can make a difference. And during the darkest of hours, she was the light that led the country to a new found hope of freedom. It was at that point in my life that I felt proudest to be a Filipino. Sadly, I have never felt that kind of elation since then.
.
Now that she is gone, I certainly hope that all hope is not lost. Hopefully, there is another “Cory Aquino” in our midst that will lead the way to our redemption as a people. And until that day comes, I will mourn the passing of one of our nation’s most loved Mothers.
.
To you our dearest Pres. Aquino, thank you. And may you rest in eternal peace in the loving arms of our dear Lord.

I was your typical little girl when I was, well, a little girl. I loved dolls, girly stuff, playing dress up, and I loved birthday parties. My birthday parties in particular.
.
Having the good fortune of being the first born daughter of a first born son plus having the additional honor of being the first grandchild, birthdays were a big thing for me. They still are, actually. And because I was such a birthday fanatic, my parents always made sure that mine were celebrated in the way that befitted my age.
.
My first birthday was every little girl’s dream…at least back in the 60’s, that is. My very first birthday party was held at my grandparent’s garden. Back then there were no magicians and hosts in costumes. Since I have no memory whatsoever of the occasion, I have to rely on pictures to attest to the fact that it was a wonderful celebration. Looking at my pics I recognized some of my friends and family because their baby faces bore similarities to their adult mugs. An aunt served as the party host and was game master of the event. Games then were hit-the-pot and pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey which are rarely played today. But judging from the smiles on everyone’s faces it looked like they really had fun.
.
Of course, the much anticipated part of the party was the candle blowing ceremony and my parents made sure that they got a cake fit for their party princess…ME!! Of course, nothing beat Goldilocks birthday cake. Mine had a princess doll for an accent and pretty flowers as decoration. Of course, I was a baby then so I cannot vouch for my refusal to blow my cake..this is according to my Mother.

Yes, you read it right..my little girl just asked me for a Harley. Well, at least I think she did.

I’m not really that surprised. My kids have always expressed their admiration over my driving. Several times they have said that they want to learn how to drive already so they can go places like me. Sounds exactly like me when I was a kid. In my case, it was our driver who I badgered on a daily basis. I knew I wouldn’t get anywhere if I expressed my desire to my Dad so it was the family driver that gave in to my whims. And because of my constant begging, I finally learned to drive at 12 years old. Yep…12 years old. Funny thing is that when my Mom found out, she was so proud and wanted to see me do my stuff. So one afternoon, I got into one of the cars (a souped up Toyota Corolla) and floored it. Zoooooommmmm!!!! I remember seeing the look of my Mom from the rear view mirror. She looked like she needed an AED with that “I’m about to have a heart attack!!” look.

I was doing some spring cleaning (my picture and video files) when I found this long lost video of Gaby’s first few steps. It really brought a few scant tears into my eyes because my dearly departed father was part of that video. Read the rest of this entry »»
A few days ago I was rummaging through some of my old stuff in my old study desk. First I found some old diaries and some old books. Then some really old stationery and cards. I even found my long lost stamp collection which I started when I was in grade school.
.
As I get deeper into the blackhole that is my old desk I found an unexpected treasure. I found my old Rayban Wayfarers. Contrary to what I had plurked, this is a circa 1984 pair and not an ‘86. With some calculations here and there, this pair is now 24 years old!! Can you believe it.
