The quintessential Pinoy snack. Halohalo. Personally, I love my halo-halo with only a few basic ingredients. Sweetened bananas, sago, leche flan, macapuno, nata de coco, and Ube ice cream. Thats it. Some other additions would be sweet camote, haleyang ube, pinipig, corn flakes, and even fruits. Whatever it is, any hot day will never be complete without halo-halo. You want?

I’m not a big meat eater but I have to admit, that I love cured meat. Bacon, ham, sausages…you name it.

So can you imagine my delight when we discovered that the road leading to the Ruinas de Sao Paolo in Macau’s Senado Square was peppered with tiny shops selling their version of cured meat. To top it all off, the vendors were running up to you giving away free samples for us to taste. Of course, I wasn’t resisting. I tasted them all!! My hubby even said that those free samples were enough to fill us up for lunch. True. And we did that for 2 days!! I swear, I think I gained a pound or two on those jerkies. Not to mention the other goodies that were being given out. Yep, I tasted all sorts of sweets as well. Hey, dessert has always been part of my meals…hehehe.

Now I seriously need an adipex diet pill to shave off the extra poundage I gained from the trip. As usual, regret comes in the end. Never mind, at least I had my fill, right.

Other than casinos and historical buildings, the one thing that defines our trip to Macau was a delectable little confection sold on almost every street corner there….the Egg Tart.

For someone like me who goes gaga over egg based desserts (give me leche flan or brazo de mercedes anytime and I’m a happy camper), the prospect of having authentic Portugese/Macanese egg tarts was enough reason for me to fly there. I wasn’t looking forward to bacalao as much as I was looking forward to sinking my teeth into a creamy egg tart.

And I wasn’t disappointed. As soon as we checked in at the hotel I made a beeline for the hotel bakeshop and bought some egg tarts. Sure I knew that it wasn’t going to be as good as those I could get outside but I needed my egg tart fix and I needed it fast….even if it happened to be at midnight.

Now I’m beginning to understand why the public parks there have these exercise equipment that look like first generation elliptical machines. They need to burn off the calories from eating all those egg tarts. My husband and I decided that walking was our option. We walked most of the time which gave us more reason to have more egg tarts.

As if that weren’t enough, I took home several boxes of egg tarts. I found that my kids are just as crazy over egg tarts. Proof, I’m being asked to fly back to get more egg tarts. Hmmmm…..

Around 2 weeks ago, my Mom’s house was a warzone. It all started one morning when one of her helpers complained of diarrhea. After a few hours, 2 other helpers came down with the same symptoms. Then my sister called and said that her husband and 2 other members of her household were complaining of the same symptoms. They happened to visit my Mom the day before so it really looked like a virus was quickly spreading. At that time, I was at my Mom’s with Gaby waiting for Adi’s class to end. Since the word “virus” really freaks me out, I gathered my things and my kid and quickly left for fear of catching anything in the obviously sick air. Read the rest of this entry »»

This may look like a delectable display of sushi but this is actually artificial food made of wax. Wax displays or “sampuru” (meaning samples) are a popular way of displaying menu items in Japan. These eye catching displays allow the customer to visualize what the restaurant has to offer. You can see these “sampuru” displays almost everywhere in Japan.

Ano yun? Eto ….

After almost a week in Japan, I think I managed to gain a few pounds. Despite all the walking that we did I still feel a little heavier than I was when I left. Actually, my legs still feel sore from those kilometric walks. It was way to expensive to take cabs there and getting to anywhere in Japan meant taking the subway/trains and walking. But the pounds still piled on because of all the rice that we ate. Be it rice bowls or sushi, it was carbo heaven all the way. I seriously need a magic weight loss pill to help me out. But now that I’m back home, I find myself craving for those pearly white grains again. Someone get me some sushi please.

I was your typical little girl when I was, well, a little girl. I loved dolls, girly stuff, playing dress up, and I loved birthday parties. My birthday parties in particular.
.
Having the good fortune of being the first born daughter of a first born son plus having the additional honor of being the first grandchild, birthdays were a big thing for me. They still are, actually. And because I was such a birthday fanatic, my parents always made sure that mine were celebrated in the way that befitted my age.
.
My first birthday was every little girl’s dream…at least back in the 60’s, that is. My very first birthday party was held at my grandparent’s garden. Back then there were no magicians and hosts in costumes. Since I have no memory whatsoever of the occasion, I have to rely on pictures to attest to the fact that it was a wonderful celebration. Looking at my pics I recognized some of my friends and family because their baby faces bore similarities to their adult mugs. An aunt served as the party host and was game master of the event. Games then were hit-the-pot and pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey which are rarely played today. But judging from the smiles on everyone’s faces it looked like they really had fun.
.
Of course, the much anticipated part of the party was the candle blowing ceremony and my parents made sure that they got a cake fit for their party princess…ME!! Of course, nothing beat Goldilocks birthday cake. Mine had a princess doll for an accent and pretty flowers as decoration. Of course, I was a baby then so I cannot vouch for my refusal to blow my cake..this is according to my Mother.
