This is the flower of my Chinese Bamboo plant. When I first saw this bloom I was completely amazed at how it looked. Actually, I was amazed that my plant even had flowers in the first place. I never knew that bamboos had flowers. They don’t make a constant appearance. I noticed that they bloom during the cold months. During the blooming season, the flowers have 2 phases everyday. I took this photo early in the morning when the flowers were shut. At night they open up to reveal spider like white petals that curl all the way back. And they have an interesting, albeit unpleasant, aroma which doesn’t sit too well with me. I’m thinking, maybe they emit this foul odor to repel those who want to pick them….like me.

Some types of Bamboo die after flowering

There is only a small group of flowerless plants, everything else does get some kind of flower.

What an exquisite and unusual flower. I have seen lots of bamboos, but never in bloom. Thanks for the education.
