Before I get lost in the moment, allow me to greet all the fathers out there a very happy Father’s Day. And to all the wives and kids out there…cmon guys, lets give the men of the house some love..and maybe a little break.
.
So….because it is Father’s Day, I thought it appropriate to honor not just one man but 2…my very own Popsy and my kids’ Popsy. These are the 2 men who have really made a big…huge difference in my life.
.
It is also very timely that this week’s “Weekly Question” is about Fathers and the lessons we have learned from them.
.
This weeks question is…
.

What valuable lessons have you learned from your father?

.

Me and my Popsy

.
From my Dad I learned a lot of things. He was the kind of man who, despite having 5 daughters, felt that we should be prepared for anything fate would throw us. He equipped us with skills meant for sons and knowledge meant for scholars. For him it was important that we be self-sufficient and that we know how to be independent. Here are some of the more important lessons he taught us…
.

  • Education is a priviledge. Don’t waste it.
  • Money is not a means of achieving a status above others. It is a convenience.
  • Just because you have a better life does not mean you are a better person. Being a good person is something you work on.
  • Having a menial job is not something to be ashamed of.
  • Always..always have time for your family.
  • The most important aspect of one’s person is his integrity.

.
My father was what you would call a “man’s man.” It wasn’t easy growing up with a father who conducted himself like a general. But now that I’m grown up, I have realized that if it wasn’t for that kind of strictness we might have not turned out the way we did. And now that he is gone, I carry with me the legacy of a man who believed that his family was the most important thing he ever had. This is the kind of wisdom I am now trying to impart to my children…the wisdom from a man who will remain as the one true “role model” in my life.
.
Not to forget…I still have another important “Father” in my life. My dearest hubby. I honestly believe that the reason I was attracted to this man is because in more ways that I can imagine, he is so much like my father. Hardworking, smart, stern, self-made, and a family man. The only difference between them is that he isn’t as street smart as my Dad…but I guess that’s my role in our family. Its funny because the kind of arguments I have with my husband are pretty much the kind of arguments I used to have with my Dad. Which gives me an upper hand because I’ve had years of experience in handling these tiffs. Ssshhh…he doesn’t know it yet.
