Today my eldest daughter took her very first entrance exam for “Big School.” To say that it made me anxious is an understatement. I was a mess.
.
The call time was at 7:45 A.M. and I made the necessary arrangements for my other daughter as early as last week. I made my “examinee” practice sleeping early for 3 days to get her used to waking up at 5 A.M. which was the time I felt she needed to wake up on exam day.
.
Reviewing was an altogether major production. There was the spelling practice (3 letter words only), phonics, and simple number problems. We did basic logic problems too. Lastly, we practiced how to write her long name which was a tall order for a 5-year old (GABRIELLE BEATRIZ G. LUGUE).
.
So with my alarm clock set at 5 A.M. we slept early last night.
.
At exactly 5 A.M. we were up and I headed downstairs to prepare a hearty breakfast. At 5:45 we hit the showers. We were dressed by 6:15 and I did some last minute arrangements for my other daughter (she was brought to school by her father and picked up by my Mom). We were out by 6:30.
.
We got to Miriam by 7:20 and just took the remaining time to compose ourselves. As I said, I was a ball of nerves. It wasn’t until my daughter uttered, “What’s taking so long? I want to take the exam already so I can eat pizza after.”, did I manage to relax a bit. There I was, all nervous and jittery and there was my kid, relaxed, confident, and eager to hit the books so she could have pizza.
.
Then the examiner arrived and took her wards into the examination room at exactly 7:45. Thats when it started. I got nervous again and along with my jitters, my stomach started to rumble. I felt like throwing up at first…then I felt like I needed to go you know where. I swear, I didn’t want to move lest I accidentally create a stinky mess right there. Instead I did some breathing exercises..the same ones I did when I was going into labor and guess what..they worked!!
.
The exam took 2 1/2 hours and those were the longest 2 1/2 hours I’ve had to endure. I paced, texted, played a video game on my phone, cleaned up my message inbox, cleaned my wallet, walked to the car and back. The tension was gripping!! I know I’m going to suffer a major breakout after all this. I’m going to need a really good acne cure if this happens again.
.
And then after the long wait, the doors to the exam room burst open and out came the examinees. They were all smiling!! And my kid came out last, sauntering in her trademark “yabang” walk. She gave me a thumbs up and said, “Mama, I ate all my baon. Can we now have pizza?”
.
We’re having Shakey’s for dinner.

i can so relate to this. my 7yo (who’s in primary one) will be having his first school assessments next next week. i’ve already bought a lot of practice books for him and had been reviewing with him for weeks now. i’m already too stressed with this exams thingy. see, academics is a big thing here in singapore. well, there’s no shakey’s here, but i’m sure my son would be delighted to go to pizza hut after the exams
